Kenyatta Turner

Racine Poet Laureate, 2018-19

Kenyatta Turner is known as the Lyrical Lioness. Born and raised in the Englewood Neighborhood of Chicago’s southside, she began performing at age 12. Her love of the stage led her to become captain of the well-known street dance team, House-o-Matics; she was inducted into its Hall of Fame in 2010. She’s the President of the Wisconsin Chapter of P.O.E.T. -People of Extraordinary Talent-a spoken-word troupe that believes in giving back to communities. “Community service is the core of my soul,” Kenyatta says. “Everything I have done in the past 25 years prepared me to be a successful representation of the Racine poetry community as well as the city as a whole. I am ready to churn gathered wisdom into action!”

Fully equipped path erasing the lines of confined symmetry
Poetically created within aligned synergies
Rhythmically
Proportioned in the veins of those who absorb the energy
Of the living queen
Of freedom
Past revelations churned into an edible state to feed ‘em
Snatch back once irrecoverable demons and redeem ’em
Show them what it looks like when the lights turned on
Reverse generational curses that once made individual flights yearn strong
Educate young minds and help ‘em know that being right ain’t wrong
Unplug this generation and teach ‘em how to pray past those nights deemed long
We are the gilded light
responsibility rests on our tongues
From the ministry laid in many hearts from different congregations
Yet we share common goals of lyrical plateaus
Therefore, there should be no
Visible signs of segregation
We are His people
Designed to enlighten the people
CLARITY
Seeping thru veins
Like brake fluid in disdain
Lyrics cultivating to maintain
As her brain
Manifests itself on iced roads in hydroplane
Calculated anticipations pressed to sustain
The sane
As the pen flickers ink on blank canvases
Reveling skill sets from vets who have mastered this
Genera
We bleed our souls into called
POETRY
Revelations of related stories bellowed from the bellies of the chosen
Decant impurities embellishing wisdom through exposing
